June 02 - Vulcan Tinman

Did the Vulcan Tinman today. If you ever want to do a great little race, this one is it. Vulcan is a town of somewhere about 2000 people located approx. an hour and a bit south and east of Calgary. It is best known for it’s annual Star Trek convention and the USS Enterprise, which proudly flies beside the highway into town. The Tinman is a very laid back venue with athletes aged from 2 to those who are even older than me competing in heats of their peers (based on swim times). Times vary from somewhere around 54 minutes to over 3 hours. When you are done you are treated to pancakes fresh off the grill, perogies, tons of fruit, date squares, nanaimo bars, the good yogurts and drinks that have already been eaten by the faster athletes by the time that I get in and fabulous friendly people. I’m sure that this is the only event where the volunteers get to take home the good stuff like the nanaimo bars. As for the race; Well, I had fun! Those that know me know that I can be forgetful from time to time. This day, I forgot my goggles. A quick trip to the local Stedman’s store and I was the proud owner of a new pair of bright blue goggles complete with shiny silver stars. Total Price $0.98 plus GST and they didn’t leak like my $40.00 pair have a habit of doing. I now have them stashed in my car for the next time that I forget. I was happy with bike but could have tried harder in the swim and run. My 15 km bike speed was just over 30 k/hr not including transition. I had more to give in the swim and run but for some reason, would not let myself go.  Swim: 16:38 (500M), Bike: 33:09 15 Km), Run: 32:12 (5 Km), Total: 1:21:57.1

I will be back again next year to have fun again. My goal: to beat 1:21:57.1 and enjoy the great food and friendly Vulcans!

You have to be fast if you are thinking of entering. The Tinman is capped at about 1000 entrants and is most often completely filled within hours.
