What is Love?

I’m sure the dictionary has some very fancy definition for the word, wrapped in the pages of a Harlequin paperback, dipped in choclate and in cuddling front of a blazing fireplace. But that is not the definition I’ve come to know, and my definition is something I will cherish far, far more deeply than any boxed Hallmark version of romance.

Here’s the reason why. The last few days have involved an upheaval of all my training and racing plans for the next 15 months. My sister decided that she did not want to do MdS with me, finding herself too overwhelmed with the prospect of the training while recovering from a recent knee injury, so I was left high and dry without a partner. When Kitt got home from work that day and I told him about the change in plans, I realized I didn’t relish the thought of participating in an event of this magnitude on my own.

Kitt didn’t even blink. “I’ll run it with you.”

“Really?”

“Yup.” But running is not Kitt’s favorite sport (when compared to mountain biking and paddling!), yet he is still ridiculously good at it. He is one of those naturally gifted Herculean athletes that doesn’t need to train as much as us mortals and can throw in a mind blowing performance off the couch.

“Why? I know you don’t like running”

“Well, I’d prefer if you chose the world’s toughest mountain bike race to do, but I was already coming to keep and eye on you, so I might as well run it too.”

He was so matter-of-fact about it that you could have knocked me over with a feather. My husband of 4 months and partner of 4 and a half years was willing to give up an insane amount of his free time to train and fundraise, part with our hard earned money for race fees, and possibly even the soles of his feet (depending on some of the pictures you can find of competitor’s feet from the 2008 Marathon des Sables floating around on the internet! Really gross and sobering…) so that I can follow a dream that I’ve had for the last 2 years. How great your marriage where you can experience stuff like this together?

To me, that is love. You can’t unwrap it, pull it out of an envelope or eat it. Its there in the little, (and big!), things that you do for each other and support each other in. I’m a very lucky girl and I know it.

Happy New Year and may all your plans work out for the best!

Merry Christmas and melting snow!!

Merry Christmas all! The snow has really put a damper on my running, so in the spirit of giving, I decided to give myself a week off and hike every day with Kitt, Danielle, Guinness and Panda instead. The dogs LOVE making fresh tracks and the deeper the better! Personally, I can’t wait til the snow melts and the trails re-appear! After 2 killer meals with all the family the last 2 days I am ready to begin training for 2009 in earnest. Today Kitt and I joined up with a friend of ours from Squamish, Mike (and his dog Raven!) and went for a beautiful 7ish km hike in Thetis with all 3 dogs. It was awesome, snow still lightly falling and the dogs tearing around and easily doing twice the distance we did! Afterwards it was back to our place for lunch, a beer and nap time for both dogs and humans.

It’s going to be an interesting year for me, the first time I have ever begun training for something 15 months away! I’ve googled all my favorite races and events, compiled a list (haven’t checked it twice..) and incorporated them into my training plan. 15 months seems like a long ways away, but now that I am training and my end goal is Marathon des Sables, I wish it was twice as long from now so I could pad my athletic resume with a few ultras and many marathons closer to home!

So far my list is:
*************
Bear Mountain Summit race
All the Gutbusters
Suburban Rush
TC 10 km
both MOMARS
Kusam Klimb
Esquimalt 8km
Great Lake Ultra
Royal Victoria Marathon
Shawnigan Lake 1/2 Marathon
Thetis Lake Relay (Danielle and I will each be teams unto ourselves!)
Bear Mountain 10km

If it all works out, I will be doing at least 18 events. I’m only planning on trying to race 6 or 7 and use the rest as good training experiences and to develop my ‘mental toughness.’ I’m planning on riding my mtn bike as cross training, and develop my skills enough to maybe race a beginner XC race or something in the summer, something fun and grassroots! I am most looking forward to the 2 MOMARS, the Gutbusters, Suburban Rush and the Kusam Klimb. It would be awesome to race a MOMAR in Squamish, I’ve wanted to for the last few years but it has never worked out. This is gonna be the biggest and best year yet!

A VERY BIG and heartfelt THANK YOU to our team sponsors, Marty’s Mountain Cycle and Ocean River Sports, for all your support and help this year – we couldn’t have done it with out you Marty and Brian!!

Merry Christmas everyone and see you in the New Year!!

Our early Christmas present and new running buddy

The last week has been GREAT training for me. Last Thursday (4th) Panda and I left the house to explore a few trails off Lochside Trail that we had never been down. I initially thought we were going to be gone for 30 minutes or so, but it quickly became apparent that the day was too nice to squander and we hit on one trail that kept going and going. After 60 minutes and a killer climb we popped out at Royal Oak Cemetary (actually pretty much right at my dad’s grave site) where Panda got to run off leash and the trail just flowed. This run was a great turning point for me. I feel focussed, relaxed and ready to start training for next year.

Friday and Saturday were sick days for me, massive headaches and little sleep, not my favorite combination of things! My next run was Sunday night (sadly) on a treadmill at work and the 65 minutes flew by. Monday was a nice rest day, took Panda for a relaxed hike and did some house work.

Tuesday the 9th was a very special day. Kitt and I were out running errands downtown when Kitt said that we should look in the SPCA for a cat to help with the rat problem in our crawlspace. When we pulled into the parking lot we said that we should look at the dogs too, cuz Panda might want a little friend to keep her company when Kitt and I are both working dayshift. As it played out, we never even looked at the cats up for adoption, (it’s too cold to try and adopt an outside cat anyways!) and went straight to the dog kennels.

There were a lot of sad eyes, dogs so depressed and broken that they didnt even raise their heads from their beds as we walked by. In the second section I spied a pair of bright eyes and a happy, hopeful face. As I went up to the gate this young Shepherd/Rotti pup got off his bed and sat at the other side of the gate and pressed his body so hard against it that he nearly came thru the gate! His tail was wagging the whole time I scratched him thru the bars. I don’t know what it was, maybe the hope in his eyes, but I knew we needed to take this little guy and give him a good home. Kitt tried to get me to look at several other dogs but I kept coming back to this little pup. Finally, Kitt just smiled at me and said we should go talk to the ladies at the front desk and find out more about him. Poor little guy had just been shipped in from Quennell, was about 9 months old and VERY high energy. In other words: perfect running partner! Luckily we had Panda (who is not the most social of creatures where other dogs are concerned!) in the back of the truck so we were able to walk them together and make sure that they got along. After a lot of deliberation and test walkies with a few other dogs, we took the little Shep/Rotti home! I’m a lucky girl with a fantastic husband!!

Tuesday night when we brought Guinness home we took both dogs for a 45 minute run, which ensured that no one tore up the house when we finally got inside. We got both of them up on the couch while we had dinner and Guinness could hardly keep his eyes open. We thought Panda would like a little friend, and at first she loved having someone to romp with, but now she keeps looking at us like ‘when is this annoying dude going home??’ I think the novelty has quickly worn off and she wants to be the sole center of our attention again. Poor girl! Wednesday afternoon Kitt, Marc, Panda, Guinness and I went for a lap around Thetis is in the beautiful, warm sunshine. Marc took us off the usual beaten track and we ran to the top of a hill with a beautiful towards Royal Roads and the ocean. The trails were extremely mucky and slick, Marc bailed while racing Kitt around a corner and got soaked! The dogs loved it and Panda was able to race around off leash, Guinness doesnt come when he’s called yet so he stayed attached to my waist (picked up the tip from watching ‘The Dog Whisperer’ – just loop the leash around your waist and voila! umbilical cord and hands-free running!) Guinness’s only major downfall is that he isnt house trained and I had forgotten how small puppies bladders are!

Guinness is a great little runner, nice long legs and his is game to be just out and about! Panda is an amazing dog, extremely fit, but she has a narrow spinal column in her hip area that pinches her spinal cord and causes her extreme pain in her hind end when she has done too much. My intention, as I train for MdS, is to try and do 6-8km with both dogs, then as Guinness gets older and fitter, to head longer with Guinness to avoid causing Panda any pain or discomfort.

Tonight we went out for a run around the Bog under the gorgeous moon. While running back towards the house and the moon we turned our headlamps off and ran by moonlight. It was fantastic, almost spiritual. The peace and quiet was so beautiful, I wish it had been lightly snowing and it would have been perfect! Now I’m at work for the night, wishing I was home with Kitt, the dogs, hot chocolate and a book. I can’t wait for the snowfall warning tomorrow – bring it on!! I hope we get a ton!

home sweet home

It’s good to be home. The weather may be a bit dismal, but when enjoyed with your favorite pair of runners, soft longsleeve and good friends, it’s perfect. Just getting back into some semblence of a training regime after our week off, nice long, slow distances and base building fun stuff. For a while I was procrastinating to see what would happen with the MdS lottery and what kind of turn my training would take for 2009, if any at all. Now I am on the hunt for a good but really inexpensive coach that wants to take on 2 poor runners doing a big race for charity and turn them into ultra runners. If such a miracle person exists, please let me know! I am also job hunting for a second job to help fund our little expedition to Morocco, as we want all our fundraising money to go directly to charity. I would write more but it’s sunny out so I’m dragging Kitt and Panda out for a few laps of the Bog, then a big cup of tea and to finish my book (going thru a real ‘comfort book’ phase and am re-reading all Jane Austen’s classics – currently re-loving ‘Pride and Prejudice’).
