My first ophidiophobic brick workout of the year

*sigh* It’s true, I loath snakes! I seem to be fine with them when we are in pet stores or I see someone holding one, but when I’m running or riding and I come across them - plug your ears! There are only 2 times you’ll ever hear me squeal like a little girl: when I step on/ride over a snake or the time I was bit by a tiny terratorial reef fish that looked Dorey in Hawaii this past January.

Yesterday morning was our first big MOMAR oriented brick workout of the year and it started with Danielle, Rosheen and I leaving my house at 0830 in the warm sunshine headed to Mt Doug Park. It was the perfect opportunity for me to try out my new Salomon pack (LOVE it because you zip into it like a vest and have easy access pockets in the front for food and other necessities!) for an extended period of time and so far the review is: perfect! It fit like a piece of clothing with more than enough room for any and everything needed for a sprint AR. Anyways, we hit the trails from the Blenkinsop Rd side and started a wicked single track ascent into the sun. 40 minutes later, sweaty and grinning from ear to ear, we exited and headed for home.

We said good bye to Danielle and Rosheen and I hopped on our bikes for a spin out to Sidney on the Lochside Trail. As we approached Mt Newton X Rd the trail took a more rural turn with grass crowding it and branches across the path. I looked down in case I got a stick thru the spokes and started to make notes: stick, big stick, stick, snake, stick.. Aahhh!!! As I rolled over it the snake made a lunge at my foot and I gave a gargled scream and tore both of my feet out of my pedals and stuck them out to either side. Passings cyclists gave me the weirdest looks, but at least my feet were safe from the tiny garden snake that could possible try and touch my foot! Once we were about 50 feet past the ‘incident area’ it was safe for me to clip back in and the ride continued, my heart rate a little higher than it should have been for our speed.

Rosheen keeps a killer pace so before I knew it we were turning around (I kept a close eye on the ground in front of me when we passed thru snake land again!) and headed to Matticks Farm for a mid-ride caffine and fuel break. Soup and raspberry Italian soda down the hatch, rain jacket on (was getting very very chilly!) it was a nice easy spin back home. Rosheen and I said good bye at my driveway and it was straight into the shower to warm up! I spent the rest of the afternoon sipping a big mug of tea, watching favorite Brit-comms, checking under the couch for slithery things and napping. Aside from the snake? A perfect day!

Short and long term wishlists!

Every year I make a list of athletic events that I would like to do. I think it’s pretty normal; it helps me focus and helps me fill up my daytimer so I look busy. The difference with this year? I’m actually knocking them all off and am injury free! (knock on wood)

I am always on the lookout for fun and crazy events to drag my sister to so this list will definately get longer! Sorry Danielle, just remember: you thought is was fun after we finished and ate some food!!

Finally a regular schedule!

After taking on a fairly heavy volunteer commitment back in February, it’s finally almost over and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Between volunteering and full time shift work finding time to get in some solid brick workouts has been tough, but now things are starting to work out again. I’ve got to admit, I can get a little grumpy when I miss my workouts, but to miss a training session and be stuck inside on a sunny day = definately grumpy!!

So, here’s a little rundown of the last week and a half, not one of my better weeks by any stretch, but 6 night shifts in 8 days left me little time to do what I really wanted!

WEDNESDAY 21st - weights (started w/30 min core exercises, then weights 2 sets: 1 min of light high reps and 2nd set 10 reps of heavy weight)
THURSDAY 22nd - easy 6km on trails behind the house
FRIDAY 23rd - Rest Day!
SATURDAY 24th - 6hrs martial arts course and 30 min run on the little trails at Elk Lake with Rosheen
SUNDAY 25th - 5km run w/ stairs and sprints along Dallas Rd and the waterfront, followed by another 4 hrs of the same martial arts course
MONDAY 26th - MUCH needed rest (a few bruises to tend to before I wear shorts and a tank top!)
TUESDAY 27th - road ride from house to downtown and back, followed by a nice 30 min trail run with Danielle and Panda near Mt Doug
WEDNESDAY 28th - weights (2 sets of light weight and high reps over 60 seconds)
THURSDAY 29th - 40 min trail run thru Royal Roads with Danielle and Panda (perfect run!!)
FRIDAY 30th - Rest day - but went to Cirque de Solie with Kitt - AMAZING show, I’ve always wanted to see it and it was brilliant!
SATURDAY 31st - 60 min paddle on the Gorge in our new canoe (Bell Northwind Carbon Fibre - SUPER light weight! I’m still learning to paddle it but I love it!)

And now, here I am, at work till the morning… Best piece of advice right now - never, ever take your pillow for granted!

Perfect Weekend? Oh yeah

Wow, that was a gorgeous weekend! In the space of 4 days my kitchen renos were finished (we’ve been without a kitchen for nearly 6 months and eating mostly takeout - I’m amazed we both didn’t gain a TON of weight!), I turned 26, slept out on our deck, and, best of all, logged some great running and cycling time in the sunshine!

This being the first time we’ve slept on the deck in our new house, I was shocked to learn (the hard way) that the birds in our neighbourhood are at their most finest between 0430 and 0530. I swear each little chickadee had its own microphone and PA! Normally being more of a night owl than a morning person, it was pretty cool to hear them all singing their hearts out. On Sunday morning though, I decided to make the most of getting up early to the birds and dragged my sister out for a run. Our dog jumped at the chance to go out and with Danielle in tow (she’s not a morning person either!), we ran 2 laps around Rithets Bog behind our house.

Later that day, when everything had been finally unpacked into the kitchen cupboards (so excited still!) and my beautiful new KitchenAid professional mixer set on the counter (the best birthday present ever!! And yes, I do watch Hell’s Kitchen and Iron Chef religiously!) Kitt and I pulled out our bikes for a spin. This was my 4th or 5th ride on my new Brodie ClimbMax (BIG step up from my old, but sturdy, Kona Cindercone!) and I’m still getting used to it so it was brilliant to log some miles on Lochside trail with it. As we rode in the direction of Mattick’s Farm (I was hoping for a cookie - you know, celebrating my birthday for the whole weekend?) Kitt pointed out the Claremont hill. He pointed, and then we just kinda seemed to follow his finger in the direction of UP. And up, and a little not so up section, followed by a final up. Sweet! My legs were screaming at me but it felt awesome. I remembered a time, not so long ago, when I would have gotten off and not been able to make it even half way. At the top, right on Wesley, right on Sea Mist and back down to Lochside. At the intersection Kitt asked, “Again?” Heck ya! As we rode Kitt remarked that I looked like a little bobbing chicken when climbing (the harder the hill = the more my head goes up and down!) and I needed to transfer that wasted energy into my legs. So up we went again and I tried to keep my upper body (more) still and felt like I gave it a little more gas as a result. This time we sprinted Wesley over to Sea Mist and rode back down. We’d been out for a while and I worked that night so at Lochside we turned for home and spun back.

It was a great day, a chance to improve my cycling, add some more running mileage and just get out in the sun and recharge! I can’t wait for the rest of summer!

Mt Tzouhalem Gutbuster

What they should have renamed the race was “Death to the Legs” but I guess no one but the masochistic few would have entered then! Today was the perfect day for it: sunny, warm and not too muddy. Danielle, Rosheen and I drove up from Victoria, fueled on the prospect of a post-race lunch feast at the local organic bakery and arrived with plenty of time to spare. We pulled into the beautiful Providence Farm off Tzouhalem Rd and realized we were an hour early. Sweet, tons of time to really warm up the legs and lungs! Having not ever done the Gutbuster series before, it was a little unsettling to have no idea what route we were going to be racing. Danielle (this was her first race ever!) looked around at the flagging, which led down a trail into the bush, and asked me where we were going. I tried to be calm and nonchalant by waving my hand towards the mountain and saying airily, “Oh probably to the top, but it’s the 6km race so it won’t be that bad and there should be a great view,” while secretly hoping I was ready for this!

It seemed like only minutes later the announcers yelled “Go!” and the 200 of us were off. Rosheen moved smoothly and methodically through the pack and soon was out of sight while Danielle and I stayed midpack and dodged a number of mucky puddles. The first few climbs were good, always lulling you into a false sense of security about what lay ahead by alternating between moderate climbs and flat sections. After 3 or 4 of these boosters and passing a number of people (the smarter racers were taking it a little slower!) we came around a corner and faced an ascent that appeared to rival K2. It was STEEP and, worst of all, I couldn’t see the end. All around us people came to a screeching halt and the race of the power hiker began!

Yesterday’s rain left a few muddy gullies and some slick rocks to skirt around, but overall, aside from the steep grade, it wasn’t so bad… Until you realized 30 minutes later that you were still power hiking, sucking wind and pleading with your screaming calves and quads that “what goes up must, at some point, come back down” is a real law. This is where Danielle made great use of her long legs and I worked on my sisterly rivalry by keeping up! I also created a new way to power hike: hunched over so far that your chest nearly touches the tops of your quads, swinging your arms wildly and grunting like a gorilla. No one came near me and we even caught a few more people before the 6km short course split from the 11km long course. As we came around the corner all you could see was people hiking up the steepest part of the trail seen yet. Some of the people around us began to groan, but then as we came closer we saw the beautiful signs that indicated short course racers to the left (with only about a 30% grade! Yay!) and the long course racers to continue up the really steep trail. Maybe we’ll hit the long course next year.

About 40 minutes in we hit the first stunning viewpoint looking west into the valley we had just come up from and the farm way at the bottom. From here the trail levelled off and we were able to start running again. Another 2 viewpoints later the downhill began in earnest. It felt so good to let your legs have their way and we started to fly down the trail, almost to the point where I forgot about the pain I was in just a short time ago. After passing a few more people I could see I was holding Danielle back, (she’s got really long legs and I only have short ones!) As she started to slow down to wait for me to close the gap between us yet again, I yelled at her to keep going, open up and really go for it. She could catch more people if she didnt have to wait for me every 200 meters. She later told me she nearly started laughing because it sounded so melodramatic, but it wasn’t meant to be cheesey! I just thought for her first race ever she should have her fair chance of finishing within her abilities. She took off down the hill at break neck speed and I started to think, “wow, she’s going really fast… If she gets hurt Mom is going to kill me!” I started to use as much gas as I had left in my tank to hang onto her in case I needed to dial 911 but she quickly widened the gap. Within the next kilometer I didnt even see her at the end of the straight stretches anymore. I was alone.

That was until I came around another corner and saw a young boy running a little in front of me. “When did he pass me?” I thought. I caught up with him and I saw he had a cast on one arm. We chatted for a few strides and I told him I thought he was a trooper and continued on down the hill. I couldn’t believe he was out running this race with its nasty slick spots in a cast! Good on him! Almost instantly the trail turned a corner and opened into what I recognized as one of the farm fields. The finish was close! About 50 meters of open grassy field and up a small rise and I could see the finish line. That 50 meters was probably the most treacherous of the whole race! One mistep and someone was bound to turn an ankle (which I found out a minute later that Rosheen had!) As I fought the urge to start power hiking again up the small rise I could hear someone coming up fast behind me. “Uh oh, has that brave guy with the cast decided to crush me at the finish line?” I thought. I kept moving and turned to see one of the elites from the 11km course streak past me and move effortlessly to the finish line in just under an hour. Cresting the hill it was only a last surge of 150 meters across more sneaky dangerous grass and I passed over the finish line and was greeted by Rosheen, Danielle and Sean.

I had just finished the hardest race I had ever entered. The power hike up the mountain was worse than anything I had ever done in a MOMAR but I had stuck to my 3 goals for the race: don’t ever stop moving, finish strong, and to make sure Danielle had a good time. Judging by the big grin on Danielle’s face I think I could safely say I succeeded! Within half an hour Danielle was already asking when the next race was and if we thought she could finish the next one. I think next time I’ll attach a bungee cord to her and let her pull me!

When all the dust settled from the 500 meter climb I came in at 1hr 1min 7sec, good enough for 28th out of 62 overall and 6th out of 13 in my group. Danielle was a little over a minute faster than me at 1hr 3sec, 27th overall and the solo athlete in her group. She got all excited when we told her she was first, but then she was disappointed to learn that she was only one person in her age group! Rosheen came in at a blistering 53 and a half minutes, 14th overall and 4th in our group. It was an amazing day! I was so proud of us, especially Tambra and my sister Danielle for taking on a new challenge with 2 weeks notice and no idea of what she was getting into. I am slowly knocking off all the races on my list for the year. The Royal Roads Gutbuster was amazing and really unique when compared with Tzouhalem, and the TC 10km was my first experience of running with a large group of friends amongst thousands of other runners. Definately some great experiences this year already!
