Yesterday was a day off so my legs were rested and ready for today’s session at Oak Bay. The National Tri team were there to do their wo too this morning so it was pretty busy track on the track with OCal and other coaches Joel, RonB and Lance.
Kev and I were to run 400-500-600m with 60″ (my target was 73-74″ 400m pace) 5 mins recovery jog then 600-700-800m with a target of 75/76. My warm up felt good, strides good too so off we went. Kev’s targets were to be a couple of seconds faster so I figured if I stayed just behind I would be ok. The first 400 though was too quick in 70″. I didn’t panic though and figured if we got into a relaxed rhythm right away we would be fine. I struggled though trying to hold my targets after that 97-1:57-(5:00 rest) 1:54 I was stiffening up in this 600m so I took 2′ to recover- 2:17 for the 700 and then totally wimped out in the 800, bailing on the second lap when I could feel I was tying up. I was bummed. I guess I want to get back to where I was too quickly. It’ll come. I also have to learn to suck it up and it was a perfect day therefore to witness the tri guys and gal focusing and getting a tough session done. I watched in complete awe as Simonran his 5 x km repeats in 2:32-2:35 with I think a 3 min recovery (after the kms they ran 10 x 400m). He looked smooth and so did Kirsten. I got to chat a bit with her as Kev and I joined her in the ocean to ice our legs. I asked her a pile of questions about recovery and training etc. She has so much experience and knowledge and was completely willing to share…thanks Kirsten!
The highlight of the day was getting a call from Chops in Ottawa. He ran 16:4X and was first Master!!! What a run!! I got to give OCal the news at the track event that was going on at UVic. He was chuffed! I watched Eric and Sean run the 500m…it was extremely warm and they ran really well! I met Gary Reed…seemed like a very nice guy. Unfortunately I couldn’t stick around to watch him race the 1000m. I had to go up to Shawnigan lake…another 50th b-day party this time for Prancy’s brad…they had close to 90 people at this party! Zany! I got home waaaay past my beddie-bye time!
