Hugh lives in Victoria, B.C. and works as an adjudicator with the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles. He has worked as a paralegal variously for lawyers in the areas of constitutional/ administrative law, expropriation, criminal, extradition, immigration, family, and personal injury law.

By part time distance education he is completing a Bachelor of Professional Arts in Governance, Law, and Management through Athabasca University.

He has alternated between competitive cycling, running, and duathlon for nearly 20 years. Hugh has competed for Canada as an elite competitor in the World Duathlon Championships and was third at the 2003 National Duathlon Championships. He has also been a competitive cyclist on and off for many years and was first alternate to a National team project (Beauce 2000) and was 4th in the 1999 B.C. Cup Road Cycling series.
