GutBuster 002 – Colliery Dam
I’ve run the Nanaimo GutBuster two other times, in 2005 I finished in 2:17:17 and in 2006 I finished in 2:12:11 and both those times were run on the Westwood Lake course. This year the course was changed up and the race was held from the Colliery Dam Park instead of Westwood Lake and other than the parking lot being a little smaller and the bathrooms not being open on time the Colliery Dam was a great venue to stage the race from.
The course itself, while harder in my opinion, was brilliant – They made some awesome changes from the previous years course. They did take out the ridge behind Westwood lake but there was way more of our West Coast single track, some wicked vistas of the ocean and lakes, two river crossings, and of course the infamous nasty big mud puddle!
My race was not spectacular… I had one speed, “Forward”, and just stuck with it to the end. I had no surges or speed bursts just plugged steadily along and finished around the 2hr 22′ mark.
So… I’m happy to have finished but am ready to get some legs back underneath me. I’m thinking that may still be a few weeks away, but between my run training and the CrossFit I hoping to get my fitness to a whole new level and crank some races later this year.
Here is a great dorky picture of me trying to wave, smile and not fall down all at the same time – Thanks Jeannette : )
