Atmospheric conditions

The TRT100 begins and ends at the Spooner Lake State Park, which is at 7000ft (2133m). The highest point of the event is just below Snow Valley Peak at 9214ft (2808m) and the low point on the course is at the bottom of Red House Loop at approximately 6800ft (2072m).

I live and train at just above sea level so how do I prepare for running at altitude?

The highest hills around Victoria are Mount Finlayson at 1375ft (419m) and Mount Douglas at 699ft (213m) or if I want to travel a ways I could drive upisland to Mount Washington at 5217ft (1590m).  I seriously doubt I will make it up to Mount Washington to get any training done and neither Mount Finlayson nor Mount Doug are high enough to get any altitude training benefits (although I can use them for hill training).

With that in mind and the lack of a CAT system I am left with adapting my training at sea level to simulate higher altitudes and feeling a bit perplexed about how to do that I sent out a plea via Twitter

and talked to Coach Turts at Crossfit Zone looking for advice and suggestions.

The fallout from my plea for help:
An offer to chat over coffee with @rumon & @campbelladam79 about training.

I received a couple of workout ideas:

  • 10 X 400m, 30″ recovery between intervals, running even paced.  A few years ago Mike Creery suggested this workout to help me prepare for the Lake Tahoe Half Marathon.
  • 2 sets of 5 X 400m, 30″ recovery between intervals, 3-5 minutes recovery between sets, running at maximum effort. Coach Turts suggested this one.

Another suggestion I got was to try snorkel running, not sure about this one?

I’m hoping to get together with Rumon and Adam sometime this weekend.
