The Coastal Challenge - Be Ready for Anything

Race Facts:
Event Dates: January 31 – February 7, 2009
Race Dates: February 1 – February 6, 2009
Length of Race: 6 Days (20km – 60km per stage)
Distance: 225-250 Kilometers

Location: The course is set along Costa Rica’s tropical Pacific coastline but weaves at times into the Talamancas, a coastal mountain range in the Southwest corner of the country. You’ll finish near the border of Panama in a serene fishing village that until recently was only accessible by boat.

Terrain: Jungle and rainforest trails, mountain trail and single track across ridgelines, highlands and coastal ranges; beaches, rocky outcroppings and reefs, river and estuary crossings, and ends in Corcovado National Park, one of the premier rainforest experiences in the world as well as a Unesco World Heritage site. Much, much more. It really defies description!

2009 Coastal Challenge Rainforest Run Expedition Finisher

The Coastal Challenge Rainforest Run was a brilliant and superb experience in every way but I can also honestly say that it has been the most difficult thing I have taken on to date.  Physically, mentally, spiritually…  in anyway you can imagine this expedition put me through my paces and beyond.

I have tried to put some of my thoughts into words and have posted a write up of each Stage on Trainharder.com:

Stage 1 – “From plantations to the Hidden Valley”

Stage 2 – “Taste of the Rainforest”

Stage 3 – “Feel the Coastal Acid”

Stage 4 – “Revenge of the Borucas”

Stage 5 – “Mist and Mangroves”

Stage 6 – “Corcovado Victory Loop”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria

I feel very honoured to be a part of this project which has provided a helping hand to BBBS of Victoria.  With immense help and support from many of you the Share a Little Magic Christmas Gala raised just over $5000 for BBBS and I got a call shortly after getting home from a very dear friend who was super stoked about receiving their Big Brother Big Sister acceptance letter in the mail that day.

but...

There are still many ways you can help Big Brother Big Sisters out…

- Spare time – Do you have a spare hour or three per week? It takes only one hour per week to become an In-School Mentor, or up to three hours per week for a minimum of one year to be a “Big”.  Check out the BBBS Website!

- Have any used clothing? – Your gently loved used clothing is recycled through the BBBS of Victoria Donation Centre (I will very gladly come pick them up).

- Talk to your employers about this project and see if there is some way they can help us out.  Maybe they would be interested in a BBBS Orientation?

- and I’m sure that if you wanted to donate some money to them they would find a very good use for it.
