See Donald Run!
Jan 7th, 2008 by Jarhead
On Saturday May 31st to Sunday June 1st, the 2008 Vancouver Island Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay for the Kids took place at Centennial Stadium at the University of Victoria.
The Relay concept is simple. The average team consists of 20-30 runners, fundraisers and volunteers. Larger companies have up to 100 employees, friends and family members on their teams. There is no limit to the number of participants on a team… and size does not matter. Each team is unique and whether big or small all teams have the opportunity to compete for awards and prizes.
I ran the 24 Hour Relay as a solo
Why you ask? Well… there is the obvious reason, to raise some money for an amazing cause and be able to do it in a great atmosphere. I’d like to get as many ‘$ per lap’ pledges as possible and as a goal amount think that somewhere in the $100-$150 in pledges/lap total is very achievable.
My other reasons are far more selfish, it’s about the challenge - I want to see how far I can go in the 24 hours, my goal is 100+ Miles (160+km). I would also like to use this event to bring some attention to the Vancouver Island ‘Ultrarunning’ scene and ultimately it is a incredible way to get my friends and family involved in my running. I’ll be needing lots of aid during the relay which will be supplied by a Support Team made up of friends and family.

Some more about the Relay:
All of the funds raised from the team fundraising and corporate sponsorships are managed by the 24 Hour Relay Society. All revenue, after the Relays’ operating expenses and overhead, is transferred to the British Columbia Lions Society for Children with Disabilities to be used for the funding of the Easter Seal camping program, with a portion of the Vancouver Island Relay funds supporting Victoria Easter Seal House. The BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities is the owner and operator of all Easter Seal programs and facilities in BC.
About the Easter Seal Camping Program:
Easter Seal Camps give BC children with disabilities the chance to discover and strengthen their individual abilities. Camp sessions are carefully planned and designed to encourage these children to gain new skills, develop new friendships, gain confidence and independence – attributes that will help them succeed in life.
About Easter Seal Camp Shawnigan:
- One of three BC camps owned and operated by the Lions Society
- Located on 22 acres in a picturesque lakefront setting north of Victoria on Shawnigan Lake
- Hosts children with disabilities from Vancouver Island
- Specially designed to adapt to the specialized needs of each camper

Hi Donald - Could Zola and I meet up with you early Tuesday evening to ensure that she’ll remember you and be able to participate this coming Sunday? She’ll be with her dad this weekend who’ll bring her up to UVic (as he did last year), so there would be the camper/runner connection.
Best Wishes,
Ann and Zola
For sure! I’ll give you a call this evening to arrange something.
