Handstand Pushups
A few weeks ago, while up in Whistler for the 5 peaks race, I was fooling around in the gym at the Fairmont with my friend and MOMAR partner Katie. She was busting out some handstands and then asked me if I could do any handstand pushups.
Now, I fancy myself when it comes to this sort of stuff so I eagerly attempted to try a few of these monsters and was surprised that I could only squeeze out a couple before I collapsed in a defeated heap on the gym floor.
Katie then announced that her brother could easily do 10 and the challenge was laid down to be able to complete 10 handstand pushups by the Buntzen lake 5 Peaks race on Sept 19th.
My plan was simple, I devised a training circuit that would work my core strength for balance and my shoulders for strength and stability.
The circuit went like this:
Hold a handstand against the wall for 10 seconds and come down x3
Hold a handstand against the wall and negative down x5
Elevated plank on the bosu for 2 minutes
Elevated pushups on the bosu x20
Repeat 3 times
Then finish with 40lb military dumbell press 5 sets of 10.
I performed this workout every other day for 2 weeks and the attempted 10 handstand pushups.
The results are in the Video below:
Probably not the best form, but not bad for 2 weeks training.
haha, that’s intense. Pretty sure I can’t do one of those. I’m profiling at 25 regular pushups now but I haven’t been practicing them at all.
